Local Sports Teams in Stony Plain, AB

There are many amateur and professional sporting teams and events that the residents of Stony Plain, AB enjoy.  Listed below are some of the squads and happenings that the locals enjoy taking in.

 

Stony Plain Parks and Recreation 

The Glenn Hall Centennial Arena is a popular local arena that is open to the public for hockey six months out of the year. There are open skate times available, as well as classes and rentals available. The sports teams and clubs across Stony Plain utilize the five fully fenced ball diamonds, seven regulation sized soccer fields, one premiere field, and fourteen mini-pitches throughout the year.

The Tri-Regional Facility offers an information night every year to inform residents of the different leisure, recreational, and sports and wellness programs in the region. This is a good way for the community to learn about the different sports and clubs offered to play for around the town.

 

High School Football

The Parkland Marauders and Parkland Panthers are the high school football powerhouses to watch in the area. The Marauders and the Panthers consistently play well and are favorites for locals. Both teams are part of the Canadian Junior Football League and provide a good game to go watch on Friday nights.

 

Baseball

In Edmonton, not far out of Stony Plain, baseball dates all the way back to 1884. Edmonton has a much-storied baseball history and supports a very successful Triple A team. Triple A baseball came to town in 1980, and the Edmonton Trappers games are played at John Ducey Park.

The Edmonton Trappers became the first one in the Canadian Triple A league to win the pennant in 1984. Since then, they have won three more titles. A lot of young prospects are scouted through this league. Many players that have played with the Edmonton Trappers have gone on to play in the major leagues, including Randy Knorr, Jason Giambi and Miguel Tejada.

 

Parkland Minor Ball Association in Stony Plain, AB

This minor league is a combination of Stony Plain and Spruce Grove amateur minor ball. This operation has been around for over thirty years. The association is open to try outs for youth and children. The mission of the organization is to provide athletes an opportunity to play baseball in a safe environment while teaching the fundamentals of the game.

 

Professional Teams

There are a number of pro teams in the Edmonton area that residents of Stony Plain follow throughout the year. The Edmonton Oilers plays in the National Hockey League and is one of the best in the league. The Oilers have won five Stanley Cups and is where Wayne Gretzky played for many years.

The Edmonton Rush is the professional Lacrosse team that just recently changed its name to the Saskatchewan Rush, and it has become a successful franchise. Edmonton is also host to an Indy Car Series, and is a well-attended event every year.

Edmonton also plays host every year to the Women’s Rugby World Cup, where twelve teams from around the world play for the title. Many Stony Plain residents are avid fans and support these great professional sports in the neighboring town.
